Homesteading used to mean acquiring land from the government and agreeing to certain improvements on the land in order for the government to expand and settle new areas. In our modern world the term “homesteading” has taken on a new meaning. Now when people talk about homesteading they are talking about living a sustainable lifestyle, growing food and using only renewable resources.
Few of us are lucky enough to own enough land to be 100% self sufficient but all of us can do something to help reduce our impact on global warming and depletion of our natural resources by learning how to do simple things like growing and preserving our own food and using renewable energy sources. Even a small urban lot can produce a surprising amount of healthy food to supplement a families grocery needs – and every mouthful of food that comes from your garden is one mouthful that didn’t have to travel 1000’s of miles and produce tons of CO2 before being consumed!
